Best Grass For Lawns

By Aaron Millane

For any home owner, getting the perfect lawn has always been a challenge. A great deal of work and cost is required. There is however an option.

In recent years, there has been a steady increase in the popularity of using artificial grass or turf. This use of synthetic or fake lawn grass to replace natural grass has become a common choice for use in front yards, city parks, and even athletic fields around the country. It promises minimized maintenance work, as well as cost.

PROS: The material found in the creation of artificial turf grass is a synthetic Polyethylene plastic, which is molded to look as blades of grass and painted to achieve a realistic color and shade, according to the client's demand. It is installed over a level of "crumb rubber", made out of ground-up rubber car tires, which serves as its foundation and holds the artificial lawn grass in position.

Since fake lawn grass is composed of synthetic material and does not grow, it does not require as much water as natural growing grass, but may still require a bit to prevent dust from settling on the plastic grass. Fertilizer, pesticides, and even mowing are also unneeded in artificial lawns.

An additional of man-made turf is its sturdiness and superb usability. Because it's not affected by climate and seasonal changes, fake grass grass may be used anytime of year. Their cosmetic value can also be considerable higher because it will always look the same bright green.

CONS: Obviously, the use of synthetic material also poses great risk. Most of which is related to health. Different health organization across the nation is actively raising numerous health problems related to the short and long term utilization of artificial grass.

Among the many health threats that had been raised regarding fake lawn grass use, one of the most highly discussed is its lead hazard. Artificial grass uses lead to brighten the grass's color and, in cases of use in athletic fields, to paint a team logo or insignia. Excessive exposure to this element has been linked to the development of mental retardation, and in some cases, even death. And since there is no "safe level" for the use of lead, it remains a great threat to the health of the people. Chemicals from the "crumb rubber" that serves as the field's base can also produce harmful dusts and seep into and contaminate underground water sources.

Environmentally speaking, the use of fake lawn grass is a "one way street". One artificial grass is installed on a patch of land, no grass and vegetation can no longer grow in that said area, even after the fake lawn grass is removed. This is due to the chemical and physical stress that the materials present on the underlying soil.

The choice of using or installing an artificial grass is highly individualized, and people are highly recommended to weigh all the possible advantages, negatives, and risks that the decision may provide. Finally, it is up to the purchaser to choose whether a perfectly molded and colored fake lawn grass can change the warmth, color, and comfort that only a well-maintained normal lawn can give.
