St Ives Bay Vacations: The Best Of Cornwall

By Ken Biggleswade

St Ives Bay holidays offer the ideal opportunity to explore the Atlantic coast of Cornwall in the United Kingdom. Clear blue sea and spectacular beaches greet visitors in this sheltered harbor.

Surfers will want to head east to Giwithian for the best waves. The west side rises higher above the ocean and features a series of headlands separated by rocky beaches. The area on this side is dotted with small villages and towns.

St Ives was once a bustling fishing village and now draws tourists from everywhere. This quaint town is laid out on cobblestone streets. Small granite cottages are interspersed with modern cafes, restaurants and galleries. The September Festival draws people from all walks of life interested in film, poetry, art, music and books. Local artists invite the public into their studios to watch the creative process.

The breathtaking cliff walk connects the village to Carbis Bay just one mile south. The trail has a lower branch where hikers get a great view of Trevose Head. Another trail leads from the bay up 700 feet to the fort on Trencrom Hill. Panoramic vistas include those of Godrevy Island. The lighthouse was erected there to mark The Stones Reef for incoming sea captains.

Sitting next to the Hayle is a village called Lelant. Ambitious hikers are directed toward the twelve mile trek known as St. Michaels Way. This trail is laid out from one coast to the other and offers two paths. One takes quiet roads and leads right into the village. The other route meanders by the coast and goes through Gulval. Bird watchers will not want to pass up a chance to see The Hayle Estuary. West Cornwall Golf Club is recognized as the oldest course in Cornwall.

A wide range of accommodations can be found to suit any budget. From cottages to coast retreats to beachfront apartments, there is something for anyone who is ready to explore the Atlantic Coast.
