Discover the Australian Outback

By Anton Maverick

Australia is a huge and varied land of beauty and wonder. Guided tours of one or two areas of this massive continent are available, which take you into the inside of this smashing and engaging place. Many guided tours of Northern Australia will take you on a luxury sailing tour of the Great Barrier Reef, one of Australia's preferred natural wonders.

Thru crystal clear sea waters, you can snorkel or scuba dive among the superb sea life that lives among the lovely coral reefs. After a day on the sea, you'll travel west thru some changing landscapes and into the Australian outback. The subsequent stop on most guided tours of Northern Australia is a trip to Mount Isa, a sweet mining town and then thru Queensland and Carnooweal on the way to the flat and engaging Northwards Territory.

Maybe you'll take a refreshing swim in the aqua-colored waters of the Mataranka's thermal pool, hidden inside a grove of tall, shady palm trees. Following this stop, you may head back up north. As you travel, many guided tours of this area will take you on a cruise thru the impressive gorge systems of the Katherine Gorge and then it's on to the entrancing Magnetic termite mounds, apparent in the Litchfield National Park.

Visitors can swim at the beautiful Florence Falls before returning to civilization in the town of Darwin in Northern Australia. In Darwin, guided tours will often have you stay at a luxury hotel and will show you the areas for shopping, dining and enjoying the nightlife at one of Darwin's famous clubs. Visit the museums and the historic early settlement in this Australian frontier town.

Campervan Hire Australia is a terrific resource for finding a quality campervan if your thinking about driving around yourself. To actually "see" Australia's finest, many Northerly Australia guided tours will take you on a Yellow Water Billabong Cruise, where you can snap pictures and catch sight of Australia's many crocodiles, snakes, dingos and other water life easily found in the Kakadu region. Another favourite spot is the Manyallaluk Aboriginal Cultural Center where you'll see the way in which the native peoples lived and continue to live today.

Demonstrations show you how to throw a spear and create fire the natural way. This center is run by the aborigines themselves so you will get a fairly authentic experience. There are places to go shopping for aboriginal souvenirs.
