It's a Shame I Shall Not Take Advantage of the Weather Which Is Brilliant for Tackle Dangling

By Claire Porter

Today is a perfect day for tackle dangling. If I did not have other things to do that are a lot more vital, I would have been away down to the fishing tackle shop and then making a bee-line for the canal to get the fishing line set up and into the water. The weather is quite overcast but, and here is the key, not too icy at all. I am, will stay, and have scarcely been ashamed to state to being a decent-weather fisher. If I'm needed to wrap up like Ernest Shackleton in order to partake of a leisure pastime, then something has gone badly awry with the choice making process as far as I'm concerned.

However, this is greats, light clouds, scarcely any wind and a promise of a dry day so it would be excellent for fish to be feeding rather than sitting at the bottom and staying put. But, if they are feeding then there is an excellent chance of getting a few on the end of the fishing line since they will have had lengthy periods through December and January when they will not have been feeding and Spring is definitely coming. As I found yesterday, the first crocuses have been spotted and the snowdrops are also on the way, which means that very soon the fish are going to be spawning and will want to get themselves fit for that, which should be rich pickings for anglers.

The best data over what is happening in the water of course is to be had at the local fishing tackle shop, who will know from listening to their clients where the best spots are at that particular moment. They will also be able to give advice on what the fish are feeding on, since they can be difficult about what they eat and often even the old reliable bait like maggots and fly castors won't do and something as mundane as bread can tempt the fish to almost jump onto the fishing line in their eagerness. This is where effective ground baiting of the swim can make a difference as it can help to throw down a mix of food which can help reduce the fishes' usual wariness at the seeminglyeasy pickings.

But I will not be getting out to get the best of it. As well as not owning the right permission or licences, there are greater priority chores for me today, such as looking to get a job, delivering my little son to nursery and working to promote my websites, which they cannot help me with at the fishing tackle shop, or sat with my fishing line in the water. Until I am able to buy an iPad of course!
