Activities for families in Lanzarote

By Asaf Warsi

Lanzarote is the fourth largest of the volcanic archipelago that is the Canary Islands. As such there is plenty to see and do, from its incredible geological wonders such as the Green Lagoon to the golden and white sandy beaches and great surf spots. However, parents who are planning to bring children along may worry that there is little to keep their little ones occupied during their stay. This article names just a few of the many things that the whole family can enjoy on this beautiful island.

The trick is to find ways of combining excitement and adventure for the kids, and adequate relaxation for the adults. And what is more of a perfect way to do that than let your kids sail you around on a catamaran? On Puerto Calero - and I'm sure elsewhere on the island - you can embark on a relaxing trip in a catamaran around the island, anchoring on various beautiful beaches along the way and stopping for snorkelling. What's more is that the instructors often allow children to learn the ins and outs of sailing these magnificent boats.

There are plenty of underwater safaris that are bound to enthral the whole family. One such tour is the Yellow Submarine, again on Puerto Calero, which takes you right to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean where, through the many viewing points on the sub, and on the screens provided, you will be able to show your family some of the most spectacular marine life there is.

If all else fails with your children there are plenty of theme parks on the island that will not fail to bring a smile to their face. Wetworld, for example, is the islands water park featuring various water slides. Rancho Texas is a popular theme park that has a fun Wild West theme to it, while also being the islands biggest zoo.

Timanfaya national park is the ultimate destination if you want to amaze your family with the islands unique natural properties. The coach ride in is enough to render anyone speechless, as it features endless views of the spectacularly unique 'Martian' landscape; but it gets better when you arrive at the mountain. Your tour guide will provide shocking demonstrations of the heat by pouring water into a very shallow hole in the ground, which spouts steam straight back out like a tiny geyser. After taking a lazy camel ride up to the top, you can then have a meal heated by the geothermal heat of the volcano. If nothing else unites the family, the awe of coming face to face with the power of a volcano will.
