Facts You Ought To Know Before Buying A Curcuma Flower

By Ronald Reed

One of the most spectacular plants you can add to your residential landscape is the curcuma. This plant is widely available in stores between late June and August. If you are buying it for the first time, it is highly likely that you will have some serious questions to ask. Here some facts you should know about the curcuma flower.

It is perfectly okay for you to plant the flower in garden borders and beds. However, the curcuma plant is also perfect for pots. Enjoying the flower as a potted plant will allow you to keep it right outside your house. For it to thrive, it will need plenty of moisture and properly drained soil that is packed with organic matter. In case the soil available at your place is clay or sand, simply add a generous amount of organic matter before planting your flower.

Curcuma flowers are tropical beauties so you can choose to grow them under the shade or sun. The plant will even so thrive best in areas where it can get some morning sunlight and plenty of afternoon shade. If you choose a garden bed that gets sunshine all day, you merely need to ascertain that the grounds remain effectively moist.

People will often seek to know whether curcuma flowers spread. Well, you should not expect the flower to change too much in size from the moment you purchase it. You can therefore choose a small space where to grow it because it will not spread. Season after season, new leaves may appear, though the size of the plant will not change immensely.

Unfortunately, your curcuma flowers will not make outstanding houseplants. Normally, they go dormant when put indoors and they may lose both their flowers and leaves. During the fall and summer months, however, they can thrive indoors as long as they are placed beside bright windows. Your plant may even so begin to wither if you leave it indoors until late spring.

Tropical plants do not do well under freezing temperatures or frost. Under such conditions, they dry out and die. Most people will therefore invest in curcumas as annual plants and will buy new ones after the winter. You may even so save your investment by implementing a few basic tips.

Curcumas have distinctive, pine-cone-shaped flowers and this makes them show stoppers. While they do not do well under cold temperatures, they are tropical perennial plants. When the winter sets in, you can put them indoors, though you cannot treat them like other houseplants. In this case, you want to take the tubers and store them in a cool and dry area.

In case the flower is planted in the ground, dig out the tubers during fall. Ideally you should wait until the foliage starts to yellow. Clean out the loose soil on the tubers and allow them to dry in a sunny place for a few days. You can then store them in a container with peat moss or sand over the winter.
