Basics On A Grandfather Clock Regulation

By Brian Parker

The movement of a watch is supposedly the most vital part of the grandfather clock regulation. For timekeeping and controlling the hour strike and its chime, the movement is necessary. Weights and the pendulum are equally vital for the operation of the watch. The pendulum tends to be so important because it helps in regulating time hence one should adjust it well to keep correct time.

There are usually three weights that are used in providing power to the left weight (hour strike), center weight (time) and the right weight (chime and melody). These weights are very necessary to the operation of the antique watch. Thus they have to be present. The weights are very different from each other, and they should hang adequately to make sure that the operation is okay.

Usually, cables or chains are used for hanging the weights during the movement, and it is mandatory to raise them after exactly one week to ensure that the watch keeps working. Hammers are used to hitting various rod lengths to make the strike as well as the chime to produce sounds. These rods make sounds that are different, and this is achieved by controlling how the hammers hit corresponding rods.

It is thus necessary that a person is in the know of all the components of the grandfather clock as well as the uses of each of the components for them to be able to regulate it. The wristwatch is supposed to be firmly placed on the ground so that it does not fall over. Hence, it is advisable to adjust all the levers to ensure that the watch is stable and aligned well.

Once the watch is stable, the pendulums should be hanged in position. These pendulums are usually having a colored protective film made from plastic to protect the disk. One should remove the disk carefully before hanging the pendulum. Ensure that you follow the procedure to avoid ruining the delicate pendulum which is necessary for the operation of the watch-wrist.

After you have hanged all pendulums, putting the weights in their correct positions should be the next thing. Make a point of checking the assembly of the weights to ensure that they have been tightly packed. On top of that, check that the cables are correctly fitted to their pulleys. After this, you can now hang your weights on the pulleys.

In case your watch has additional features such as a moon dial that is moving, ensure that you have set it well. You can do this by using fingers to put little pressure on the front side. Then, rotate the moon dial in the clockwise direction and the event it refuses to rotate, do not force it. You can try again after a few hours.

Once the moon dial is set, setting time is now done. You should be aware that when setting time, the hand that should be moved is the minute one. The hour hand is supposed to move when the minute hand moves, and it does this automatically. You can then start watching when the regulation is complete.
