Students may decide to go to school or hire a teacher for private classes in the comfort of their houses. The classes are usually divided into three categories based on skill level. Beginner classes help individuals who are just starting out learn the basics such as proper posture, ear training, finger speed exercises and appropriate hand gesture. Other things that beginners are taught include chord progressions, counting whole, quarter and half notes.

Intermediate piano lessons are for those who are already familiar with the instrument. The level acts as a bridge to be an expert in playing the instrument. Learners are taught how to read the sheet music, chord charts and fundamental time signatures. They are also taught how to understand rests, scales and counting eighth notes and eighth note triplets.

The last level is the advanced level. It teaches students how to play the glissando and how to understand piano intervals. Additionally, learners are taught note value exercise, dotted notation, the circle of fifths and the different levels of the harmonic scale. At this stage self-exploration and immense training and practice is required for students to master the art of playing the instrument well.

In the beginning, the piano may feel a little bit strange to the fingers. However, as one progresses through the lessons, the piano keyboard becomes more familiar and the finger numbers feel more automatic. From here, one can grow their skills to expert level. Each lesson is important and one should take the time to master and practice slowly and methodically until they master each element.

Home practice is necessary to hone skills further because practice at school may be limited in terms of time. Buying one is easy especially if you know what exactly you are looking for. Consider home space before determining the shape, style or size of one. For most people, a medium sized one is ideal as it does not occupy a large space and also good quality of sound.

A piano must come with appropriate accessories. You will have to purchase accessories such as a bench, music books and a metronome. Beginners who have problems keeping up with a rhythm should purchase a metronome. It can be really useful if you are trying to maintain a steady tempo. Remember proper posture is very important as it enables you to sit upright, reach the keyboard without straining. In addition, remember to take each class seriously because it is always a prerequisite for the next one.
