DIY Party Craft Ideas For All Types Of Occasions

By Janine Hughes

There are so many things that can be created to put a special and unique spin on any type of celebration. DIY party craft ideas done well can look just as professional as hiring an event planner or purchasing expensive items. The great thing about it DIY is that it can save a lot of money towards a one-time celebration and it can also be a lot of fun to do with friends and family in preparation for the big event.

Of course, one of the most obvious celebrations to create something original or fun would be a children's party, especially something with a theme. For something fun that everyone can partake in, and even take home with them, try having a station where kids can build their own cupcakes. Use a plastic paint palette for each child and place the frosted cupcake in the centre.

In each of the grooves of the palette, you can put a different kind of topping for each child to use. Good toppings are chocolate drops, gummy bears, sprinkles and jelly beans. You can also make fun little toppers for them to finish with, either on a straw or on a toothpick.

Try incorporating the boy/girl theme into decor for a baby shower but also make it a game to get guests going. If the mother-to-be hasn't revealed the baby's gender, randomly stick pink and blue balloons on the wall. Have guests either throw a dart or prick a balloon with a pin to try and see if they can guess correctly.

Each balloon should contain a piece of paper folded up inside. All except for one should have the words 'Try Again!' written on them. The winning balloon will be the one with the paper that says 'Yes! It's a girl/boy!' and the winner should receive a prize.

For a sparkly glam New Year's party, elegance and fun is the order of the day. You can use small glasses as candle holders and paint the rims with glue that dries clear in a band about two finger widths wide. Then, before the glue dries completely, dip the glued part into a glitter of your choice. Silver and gold are great New Year's colours, but you can use whatever you like. Put tea light candles in the holders and light them to use in the centre of the dinner tables or to randomly place around the room.

Pinatas are great for any age or occasion, depending on what's inside. It's a lot of fun to make a pinata from cardboard for a kid's birthday party, but consider making a star or moon-shaped one for an occasion where the guests are all adults. They can be filled with goodies as tradition states, or they can simply be used as decoration to hang from the ceiling at different levels.

For a themed event like a Halloween shindig, make a kitsch cooler for drinks out of a pumpkin. Cut the pumpkin in half and scoop out the insides until there is only a hollow half pumpkin shell. Place a bowl filled with ice inside the shell of the half pumpkin and use it as an ice bucket or place cans and bottled drinks in the ice to use it as a cooler. One pumpkin will make two of these, so they can be placed all over the room for convenience.
