Spring Clean your Soul

By Sara Rizk

It seems that this has been one epoch of a winter. Months of being cold, dark and uncertain, months of longing for spring when it will be warmer, when we will feel happier, when we will get out more, eat less, exercise with purpose... as if a season, albeit one associated with hope, can bring us instant contentment! It raises a glaring question: why do we continuously put our lives on hold, waiting for the grass to turn a brighter shade of green over there, waiting for better luck, a better time, a better place, a better mind-set when all will finally be well?

Consider the inevitable 'spring cleaning' which seems to be obligatory with this season of freshness and rebirth. Why wait? Do we confine ourselves to homes that are less than spruce simply because it is winter; because we are too cold to be bothered; because the sunshine displays too dramatically the dirt, dust and detritus of our lives?

"When I win the lottery" "When I have lost two stones" "When I get that promotion" We live 'when' lives based on tomorrows. Our entire existence is placed on hold awaiting some miracle that will, finally, make us feel successful and happy. We are eternally searching for some holy grail of all things 'better': a better house, a better job, a better bank balance. Never happy with the present, with what we have, we continue to reach out for that bully Better, who laughs scornfully as it runs off, carrying our happiness with it.

We spring clean, we visit DIY stores, we gleefully pack our woollies into moth balls: 'Now is the time', we say, hopeful of the blessing of Better. But, once the walls are freshly papered; the kitchen is spotless; the bikini flutters brightly on the line... are we happy then? No, still we wait and wait... Better is not close enough. Today falls short, not quite good enough.

Happiness is alive and well inside each and every one of us. It is a tiny polyp ready to detach and shrivel at the slightest whim or, an exquisite anemone waiting to be fed with hope and joy and affirmation and optimism. So, why wait?

But it is not as complicated as that. We love Spring because it is bright and promising: so let us look for the light in every day. Let us embrace this time and every single day to come with determination to see, with open eyes, the special in everything. Let us live in the minute and stop looking to some vague future for success: after all, it may never come. Spring into action: live in the now, count your blessings, be glad and grateful every single day: it is the only way to feel alive, be it Spring or any other glorious season of any other glorious year we are allowed to enjoy.

If you're looking to celebrate Spring with style then you really should head to private members club, Home House. With longer, lighter (and warmer) days ahead, there are oodles of events this month, including the Members' Spring Party 'Once Upon a Time'!
