The Use of Cowhide Decor in Contemporary Homes

By Chloe Gib

Western design elements are not for the faint of heart. The use of cowhide decor may prove to be too bold for some people. But for others, taking the risk is well worth it as it renders their home stylish. Ranchers and hunters are not just the only ones who can take advantage of the whimsical patterns that cowhides offer for they are now available to the public.

Its use has increased over the years. Previously it was only used as rugs, now it can be seen in other products like pillows, wall hangings, and even ottomans. There are no two identical patterns as all cows differ from each other. Because of this, you can be sure to own a unique piece when you buy any product made from those hides.

The main source of this product is the beef industry. As such, its production takes the backseat to the more important purpose of the cow which is as food source. That is why perfect hides are quite impossible to find. There may be scratches and marking on the hides as a result of what the cow went through. Branding signs may even be present in some rugs. However, such mark need not be cause for concern as it only adds on to the character of your rug. Patchwork rugs are also made out of excess pieces of hide.

Cowboy western decor is primarily nature inspired. To have your house looking like something out of a country western movie, you can make use of several natural elements. Here are those elements are how they can be used in your house to add a western feel to it.

Wood to be used must not look shiny and new. As much as possible, you would want it to look weathered. This material can be used on your walls or floor. Your wooden furniture do not have to match otherwise it would look like you are trying too hard. Rustic furnishings are the perfect addition to a western inspired home.

Leather is another central element to this style. Leather upholstery makes your furniture easy to maintain. Also the characteristic sturdiness of these materials allows you to use it for a long time to come. Apart from upholstery, wall hangings made of this material also enhance your cowboy theme

The color scheme of your house should also reflect the colors of nature. Good color choices include brown, green, and beige. Brick red is also a good choice as this will best showcase your rustic designs.

Having nature in your home is the primary reason for the choice of western deign. Cowhide decor is one such design that compliments a western home. With its use, you can incorporate a certain warmth to any room in your house.
