Tips For Garage Door Repair

By John Dilantros

Garage door repair is not as hard as people may think. It is possible to perform this repair on your own, even if you are not good at mechanical things. This first thing to do is figure out what the problem is.

Does your garage door fall after it is released, or stick when it is opening or closing? If the problem is that the door will not open or close check the opener and if it is functioning all you will have to do it reprogram the opener.

And if the door sticks when you're trying to open or close it, look to see if the hinges and metal rollers need oil. Then look for clogs or dirt in the tracks, and if you find any clean it out with ordinary liquid household cleaning soap, then lubricate the area.

The last problem that it may be is if your door falls after it has been released. This might be because your extension springs are worn, in that case just switch out your old springs for new ones.

These are the three most common garage door problems. So take note that the two primary areas for trouble that can prevent your garage door from working are the tracks and the springs. The tracks are an instrumental part of the door's opening mechanism. Metal brackets are used to hold them firmly in place. If your door isn't moving up and down, look carefully at these brackets to see if they have been jogged loose. If this turns out to be the situation, tighten the bolts or screws; if it isn't, check the tracks themselves to determine if they are bent, dented or otherwise out of alignment.

If the tracks happen to be the source of your problem, try reshaping them with a mallet. If reshaping the tracks is ineffective, your best bet is to purchase replacement tracks. If the problem happens to lie in the springs, some simple adjustments may be all that are required. However, if your garage door functions with a torsion spring, the repair may be quite complicated and your are better off hiring a professional in order to avoid serious injury from an incorrect repair.

Proper garage door maintenance is something that should not be neglected. When faced with a garage door problem, keep this simple guide handy.
