Using A Cigar Lighter Right After Refilling

By Dave Sabot

Windproof lighters are fantastic gadgets that ensure you can enjoy your preferred pastime no matter what the weather might be doing. However, you will eventually have to refill that lighter, no matter how much or how little you use it. While you might think you have a firm grasp on the refilling process, many smokers do not know whether the lighter can be lit directly after being refilled. Understanding the importance of this is vital. Here, you will find a handy guide to refilling that will answer your questions about immediate use.

To answer the question, you should not use your lighter immediately after you refill it. Most lighter manufacturers and lighter fluid manufactures recommend that you allow the lighter and its contents to come to room temperature before you light up again. Why is this? First, it helps to ensure that any overspray evaporates, keeping you from injury. Second, it helps to ensure that your lighter ignites correctly, the first time. You will also need to know how to refill your lighter properly.

How should you refill your lighter correctly? Hold the lighter vertically in front of you. Keep the bottom of the lighter facing up and locate the fuel nozzle. Now, insert the nozzle of your fuel canister into the receptacle. Keep the lighter and the canister away from your eyes during the refilling process. As a note, some lighter fuel manufacturers recommend that you shake the canister before using it, while others do not. Check the canister to find out which applies to you.

Now that you have inserted the canister into the fuel nozzle, you should press down on the canister. Keep the lighter away from your face and body to avoid any potential spray of fuel. You will hear a hissing sound as the fuel moves from the canister to the lighter. You will also feel the canister and the lighter grow noticeably cooler in your hands. You should allow the fuel to transfer for approximately five seconds, though you may have to repeat the process. You should avoid overfilling your lighter, as this can result in a hazardous condition.

Once the lighter is full, remove the canister and allow the lighter's contents to warm to room temperature. Once this occurs, you can adjust the flame height to your desired setting and ignite the lighter. If the lighter does not light, then you will need to repeat the refilling process. After each refill, you should ensure that the lighter and its contents are able to reach room temperature before you attempt to light the lighter again.
